Thermohydraulic power generation process.
The thermohydraulic process is a method of generating electricity, which takes advantage of the excess thermal energy extracted by steam power plants that cannot be used and thus is released into the environment.
During the process of producing electricity using the steam method, whether we are talking about the case of biofuels, fossil fuels, hydrocarbons or in the case of nuclear energy, the process remains the same, the water which is also the working medium is heated to a very high temperature, resulting in is in a supercritical state for optimal system performance. This results in the operating temperature of the system being too high. With the exception of cases where the excess thermal energy, beyond the condensation temperature of the vapors, is used for heating homes in the winter months, then it is unnecessarily discharged into the environment.
With the thermohydraulic method, we can take advantage of this excess thermal energy and drop the operating temperature of the process by several degrees Celsius and therefore the loss of thermal energy to the environment, resulting in increasing the efficiency of the system. The operating temperature of the thermohydraulic method is very low as a result of which the cost of building the system falls, in combination with the operating pressure which can be atmospheric, then the cost of building the system falls even more since high strength materials are not required but neither complex constructions as in the case of a steam power plant.
The thermohydraulic method is a process of producing electricity which consists of four main parts, heating the working medium to the boiling point, raising the steam to the desired height, cooling the steam to its liquefaction point and collecting the condensate with for the purpose of returning it to its original height and then relieving its static pressure in a hydro turbine for the rotation of an electric generator and the production of electricity. In essence, the operating principle of this method is based on the application of two points with a temperature difference within the same system, which points inversely affect the behavior of the fluid inside the system, and as a condition, the altitude difference of the two points is defined where it will help in achieving the desired static pressure at the inlet of the productive part of the system.
As you present in drawing 1, for the correct operation of the method we have the following, we provide the heat to be exploited 8, in boiler 1, then we have the anode pipe 2 which is connected to the condenser 3, and the condenser is inside the collector 4 which it is connected to the cathode pipe 5. At the end of the cathode pipe 5, the turbine 6 is connected, which rotates the generator 7. With the help of the return pipe 9, the turbine 6 is connected to the boiler 1.
When heating the working medium in the boiler (1) we cause boiling resulting in the rise of the vapors through an insulated pipe (2) to the desired elevation point, at the highest desired height there is the condenser (3) which causes partial cooling to the point of liquefaction of the vapors , the collector (4) collects and directs the liquid to a down pipe (5) where we want it to be filled up to the upper elevation point, at the lower elevation point of the pipe (5) we take the working medium under pressure with the help of a nozzle and drop it in a hydro turbine (6) for energy production. The pressure of the working medium is static and therefore has a direct relationship with the upper altitude point of condensate collection. The working medium after being thrown into the hydro turbine (6) is collected and directed back to the boiler (1) where it is again heated to boiling point, repeating the process as a result of which the thermal cycle of the method is completed. The size of the volume supply also defines the hydro turbine (6) that we will use.
In an example we will use KOL hydroturbine (6) pelton water as a working medium, the vapors will rise to eighty meters where they will be liquefied. System operating pressure is atmospheric. The cooling system of a steam power plant is used as a heat source (8). The cooling system operates at 300 degrees Celsius, with the Thermohydraulic method operating at 100 to 120 degrees Celsius we will have excess thermal energy interrelated with the temperature difference of the two systems. During the boiling of the water in the boiler (1) we will get vapors with a temperature of 100 to 120 degrees Celsius which will be directed with the help of a pipe (2) to the condenser (3). At the point of the condenser (3) the medium is cooled to 95 degrees and liquefied, then collected by the collector (4) and directed to the cathode conductor (5). The down pipe (5) returns the water to the initial elevation point where the boiling started, creating the desired pressure at the lower elevation point of the pipe (5). With a variable cross-section nozzle we pour the water into the hydro turbine (6) which rotates the electric generator (7) to produce electricity. At a theoretical level, the processes in the conductor (2) and the cathode conductor (5) will be considered isentropic so that we do not have thermal losses, with the result that the heat we add to the system is directly related to the increase in the temperature of the working medium from the point (4) in point (1) when the system is in full operation. In the example, the Thermohydraulic method takes advantage of the heat that a steam power plant rejects in the environment and converts it into electrical energy, thus increasing the efficiency of the plant to a great extent.
A system that works with the thermohydraulic method, due to its large volume of construction, could work more easily in an industrial environment. The thermohydraulic method works as an auxiliary unit of a main steam power plant exploiting the excess heat of the station and also as a main unit when the dynamics of the fuel or heat source is small for the use of conventional power plants. It can still work autonomously with any heat source that is available since the operating philosophy of the method is to have two points with a temperature but also an altitude difference within a closed circuit system of pipelines and within the circuit to have a fluid as a working medium.
