Abstract

he invention presents the construction of a solid-state photo-electrochemical cell which consists of thin layers of hymens of organic/inorganic nano-structured materials and can be used for the conversion of solar energy into electricity. The principal components of the cell, a schematic cross-section of which is presented in the attached drawing 1, is: (1) a transparent, electrically conductive plate, which is commercially available; (2) a layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) with inter-porous nano-crystal structure, in the form of a thin transparent hymen of a selected thickness which is prepared and deposited with chemical processes, as described above. A bi-carboxylated complex of ruthenium is adsorbed onto this titanium dioxide layer, asthe photo-sensitiser of ruthenium and is obtained from the market; (3) Layer of a solid electrolyte consisting of a hybrid inorganic/organic polymer impregnated with I2/I-, prepared by chemical processes, as described above, and;(4) a positive electrode made of transparent conductive glass which constitutes the second electrode and completes the cell, to which, a thin layer of platinum is usually deposited, for increasing the yield. The electrical connections with the two electrodes are effected with electrically conductive paste or epoxy glue impregnated with silver or with an electrically conductive copper band, both of which are commercially available.
