Abstract

he present invention describes a method of preparation of the compound (-)dodecahydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylnaptho(1,2b)furane 1, which is a combination of a series of new reactions, using sclareol 2 as the principal raw material. Ozonolysis of sclareol in the presence of potassium bromide leads to enolic ether 3, which is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and is converted to sclareolide 4 which is reduce with sodium-borohydride in the presence of aluminum chloride to the respective diol 5, whichis immediately cyclized to produce the oxide of norlabdanum [(-)dodecahydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylnaptho(1,2b)furane] 1. The product of this series of reactions is of exceptional purity and can be used in the production of quality fragrances.
