Abstract

The invention refers to the research, manufacture and application of an optical fibre (light conductor) for aesthetic, prosthetic and corrective dentistry-dental optical fibre. The invention is applied in the manufacturing and installation procedures for any aesthetic dental material used for the construction of prosthesis for aesthetic or corrective restorations. The invention concerns the construction of an optical fibre (light conductor) made of dental materials, aiming to hide undesirable opaque volumes or disclorations which may appear when the dental materials are exposed to light beams. It will be referred as "dental optical fibre".According to optics, an optical fibre is an elongated fibre of small diameter consisting of transparent material (plastic or glass). Light enters through one end of the fibre (input), reflects multiple times inside the fibre and then exits through the opposite end (output).Transparent materials are used in the construction of prosthetic or corrective restorations. These materials present various refractory indices in respect to their optical density. Light that sequentially passes through different material layers produces the scattering phenomenon. Scattering of light decreases but does not eliminate the reflections on opaque layers, volumes or discolorations found beneath the transparent dental material layers of variable optical densities.Research on normal teeth proved that the layering of materials in corona dentis (enamel-transparent dentin-dentin) acts as an optical fibre (light conductor), when exposed to light beams, thus hiding reflections on discolorations or opaque materials. This behaviour is caused by the presence of input and output areas made of transparent dentin ont he surface of corona dentis. In anterior teeth are dound on the cervical area and the cutting edge whereas in posterior teeth they are found on the cervical area and on the coronary fissure. When a light beam falls on the surface of corona dentis, it enters through one end of the transparent d
