Abstract

999,058. Collapsible gliders; parachutes. RYAN AERONAUTICAL CO. Nov. 18, 1963, No. 45417/63. Headings B7G and B7W. A load 40 is suspended from a collapsible glider (Fig. 7), by lines 34, 36, some of which may be reefed so that the glider takes the form of a parachute (Fig. 8). In operation, the device is deployed as a parachute, either by a static line on a load-dropping aircraft, or by a pilot parachute on the load, and then the lines are unreefed so that the glider is formed. The lines may be reefed by forming loops 66 (Fig. 8), held, e.g. by explosive links, or by winding them on drums on the load (Fig. 14, not shown). A reefing line may also pass through loops around the skirt of the parachute. The glider comprises inflatable or flexible spars 22, 24 (Fig. 10), attached to a flexible sheet, for example, of plastics coated woven fabric either by bonding or stitching, or by the sheetforming tubes through which the spars pass.
