Abstract

The invention comprises (a) a process for the preparation of piperazine derivatives of the formula <FORM:0998509/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are each an alkyl, hydroxy-alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group or an aralkyl group optionally bearing alkoxy substituents, and acid addition salts thereof, by reacting a diethanolamine R.N: (CH2CH2OH)2 with an amine R1NH2 and, if desired, converting the product into the acid addition salt, and (b) claimed per se, piperazines of the above general formula wherein R is a phenylisopropyl group and R1 is cyclohexyl, phenylisoprophyl, phenyl, b -phenylethyl, n-butyl or b -hydroxyethyl; R is cyclohexyl and R1 is phenyl or cyclohexyl, and R and R1 are both b -phenylethyl. The diethanolamine reactant is preferably prepared by reacting an amine RNH2 with ethylene oxide, suitably by reaction of the amine with 2-4 moles of ethylene oxide in an organic solvent such as methanol or ethanol, or by using a salt of the amine such as the carbonate or acetate, in water. The reaction of the ethanolamine with the amine R1.NH2 is preferably carried out at 200-300 DEG C. in the presence of a metal halide or sulphate, e.g. aluminium, zinc or calcium chloride, as a catalyst. Pharmaceutical preparations having analgesic and antihistamine activity, useful in the lowering of blood pressure comprise the above piperazine compounds or their salts with organic or inorganic acids and a pharmaceutical carrier.
