Abstract

998,384. Deep well pumps. O. V. REYNOLDS. March 20, 1962 [March 20, 1961], No. 10712/62. Heading F1A. A bottom hole well casing pump assembly comprises a reciprocating pump, a packer assembly and a venting valve operable when the assembly is inserted or removed from the well casing 10. The pump comprises a reciprocating pump barrel 14 and a fixed piston on a hollow rod 32. A centraliser 20, having axial recesses, centralises the pump barrel 14 and a wire line 12 is used to operate the pump. The packer assembly 16 includes a conical upper member 70 fixed to the piston rod 32 and a body portion 82, both made of rubber or the like, the latter slidingly receiving the piston rod. A tailpipe 18 acts as a lower support for the packer assembly 16 and when resting on the bottom of the well, the weight of the pump forces the member 70 into the body 82 to seal it against the well casing 10. The piston rod 32 extends into the tailpipe 18 and a flowpath for the liquid in the well to the pump barrel is established through holes in the piston rod. When the pump assembly is raised or lowered, the member 70 moves clear of the body 82 and a liquid flowpath is established through the tailpipe 18 and the holes in the piston rod 32 into the space below the pump barrel 14, thereby constituting the venting valve. The tailpipe is of sufficient length to position the packer above the productive formation from which the liquid is pumped.
