Abstract

A sealing, lining or coating composition comprises an unsaturated liquid polyester or epoxy resin, a curing system therefor and coal or coke having a fineness of between 10 and 350 United States Standard Sieve mesh, said coal or coke being present in an amount of up to six parts by weight per part of resin. Specified epoxy resins are the reaction products of epichlorohydrin with 1 : 5-dihydroxy naphthalene, 2 : 2 : 5 : 5-tetrakis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) hexane, 2 : 2 - bis - (p-hydroxyphenyl) propane and phenol-formaldehyde condensates and epoxidized polyolefines; specified curing agents therefor being salts of methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, hexamethylene diamine, morpholine and diethylene triamine with saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids containing up to eighteen carbon atoms; piperidine, pyridine, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, urea, adipamide, thiourea, p-toluene sulphonamide, succinic, maleic and phthalic anhydride and boron trifluoride derivatives. The polyester specified is derived from maleic acid, phthalic and ethylene glycol; specified accelerator and catalyst combinations being cobalt naphthenate and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide; manganes naphthenate and cumene hydroperoxide; diethylaniline and benzoyl peroxide and mercapto ethanol and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. A cross-linking agent, e.g. styrene, may be present in the polyester composition. The examples disclose compositions comprising: (I) a polyester derived from ethylene glycol, maleic acid and phthalic acid, cobalt naphthalene, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and coke; (II) a liquid epoxy resin derived from bis-phenol-A and epichlorhydrin, a reactive diluent, triethylene tetramine and coke; (III) a liquid epoxy resin as in (II), coke, aminoethylpiperazine and a polymer mixture of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and (IV) a liquid epoxy resin as in (II), coal or coke, triethylene tetramine and a polymer mixture as in (III). Specification 738,227 is referred to.ALSO:A protective coating or lining for pipes or other structural units comprises a cured unsaturated polyester or epoxy resin having dispersed therethrough a solid filler material comprising coal or coke and having a fineness of between 10 and 350 United States Standard Sieve Mesh, said solid material being present in an amount of up to six parts by weight per part of resin, said coating or lining having improved strength retention as compared with unfilled cured resin upon prolonged exposure to 5% sulphuric acid.
