Abstract
998,126. Polyolefin films. KALLE A.G. April 17, 1962 [April 20, 1961 (2)], No. 14922/62. Heading B5B. A polyolefin film having a clear smooth surface is produced by extruding a molten film 2 downwards from a slot-shaped nozzle 1 and pressing the still molten film at a pressure of 25-1000 mm. of water against the moving surface of a water-cooled chromium plated roller 7 by means of a stream of gas of the same width as the film from a slot-shaped nozzle 3. The width of the film may be 0À1-1À5 mm., its thickness may be 30 Á, and its rate of flow may be 50 m/min. A baffle plate (not shown) may be situated between nozzles 1 and 3. The angle of impingement of the gas stream with the advancing film may be 95-110 degrees. The distance of the nozzle 3 from the film may be 1-50 mm. The gas may be at room temperature or above, and may be air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide. A slip-improving agent in the form of an aerosol may be added to the gas before it issues from nozzle 3 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The aerosol may be formed from an aqueous solution or dispersion in water and/or an organic solvent. The slipimproving agent may be sodium chloride, carbonate, bicarbonate, perborate, sulphate, oxalate, fumarate, terephthalate, or alginate, trisodium phosphate, calcium bromide or carbonate, titanium dioxide, silica, kaolin, bentonite, aluminium oxide, mica, glass powder, zinc stearate, dimethyl terephthalate, terephthalic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, dextrin, starch, casein, zein, silicone, linseed, olive, or paraffin oil, glycerine, glycol, or methyl alcohol. A coloured salt, e.g. cobaltous chloride, Mohr's salt chromic chloride, or copper sulphate, may also be introduced into the aerosol. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, or methylpentene, or a copolymer or ethylene and propylene, ethylene and butene-1, or propylene and butene-1.
