Abstract

997,492. Circuits employing thin magnetic films. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1962 No. 40007/62. Heading H3B. Two thin magnetic films 1 and 2, Figs. 1 and 2, coupled together by a stripline 3 have the coupling between the film 1 and film 2 higher than the coupling between film 2 and film 1. The directional dependence of the coupling is shown to be due to the rectangular shape and different orientations of the films 1 and 2 and to their different permeabilities. The distance between the two conductors of the stripline 3 is made proportional to the width of the stripline 3 in order to keep the characteristic impedance of the stripline independent of position. In the shift register shown in Fig. 6 the controlling element is formed by two thin films 14 and 15 whereas the element controlled by these films is formed by thin films 16, 17 connected in parallel with respect to stripline 10. For the purpose of transferring information to the next stage these films 16 and 17 are connected in series with respect to stripline 10<SP>1</SP>. In the shift register of Fig. 14 the rectangular thin films 51-55 are arranged with their easy axis of magnetization at a small angle e to the axis of a stripline 45 carrying a rectangular pulse current i. Stripline 60 carries a constant bias current i 2 so that the effect of currents i 1 and i 2 together is to produce magnetic fields alternately tending to switch the A elements 51, 53, 55 and the B elements 52 and 54 from the easy direction to a hard direction. As an A element is switching to the hard direction the B elements are returning to the easy direction so that the pulses induced in the striplines 61-65 and having a polarity indicative of the data stored in the A elements influence the choice of the easy direction by the B elements. Because of the directional dependence of the couplings the B elements always respond to the information stored in the A element to their left. During the next half cycle information is transferred from the B elements to the A elements to their right. The shift register may be formed by producing a thin copper layer 50 on a glass substrate the other components being mounted thereon with silicon oxide insulating layers between. The copper layer 50 may form the return conductor for the strip lines.
