Abstract
Fine spherical particles of thorium oxide are prepared by (a) forming a colloidal solution of thorium hydroxide nearly saturated with ammonium nitrate, by (b) dispersing the solution in a mixture of a water-miscible and a water-immiscible or partly water-miscible organic solvent, whereupon the colloidal particles coagulate, and (c) separating and calcining the particles. Step (b) may be performed in emulsifying apparatus or by injection of the solution via a glass nozzle into the organic solvents, e.g. an ethanol/butanol mixture. Concentrated aqueous ammonia solution may be added after step (b) to harden the thorium hydroxide globules and prevent further coagulation. After separation, the particles may be washed with aqueous ammonia to remove organic solvent before calcination. The particles are heated to above 600 DEG C. for conversion to the oxide, and may then be calcined at 1300 DEG C.
