Abstract

996,903. Automatic titration apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 30, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1961], No. 3928/61. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G4] Titration apparatus comprises a constant current regulator 12 for supplying current to an electrolytic cell 11, a working electrode potential sensing device 18, and means 17 for decreasing stepwise the regulated current level in response to a predetermined value of the potential sensed by the device. Preferably the rate of operation of a timing device is simultaneously decreased. Regulator 12 is variable by an error signal output from a comparison amplifier 13 the inputs to which are the potential drop across resistor 14, which p.d. depends on the call current, and a reference voltage from a standard cell (not shown). Oscillator 15 supplies timing pulses to a register 16. The potential sensing device 18 is connected to a standard calomel electrode 19 and controls a switch 17, which in turn controls the oscillator frequency and the reference voltage. When a predetermined potential (the maximum potential at which the most readily electrolysed constituent only is electrolysed) is reached the reference voltage and pulse frequency are halved, and this process is repeated each time the potential reaches the predetermined value (up to, say, ten reductions). The total number of pulses counted is a measure of the quantity of selected constituent. In a modification the reference voltage is maintained constant and resistor 14 is doubled at each step.
