A dip-stick 5 supported in a sleeve 4 removably mounted in a member 1 is provided with a wiper 8 movable above the measuring surface of the dip-stick 5. The wiper 8 may be arranged to move upwardly or downwardly to wipe the dipstick 5 by altering the friction between the sleeve 4 and wiper 8 or sleeve 4 and member 1. A spring may be interposed between the dip-stick 5 and the wiper 8.
