Abstract

A polyurethane foam is prepared by providing a composition of an organic polyisocyanate having at least two functional isocyanate groups, a polyol such as castor oil, a polyester, a polyether or a mixture thereof, and a blowing agent solubilizing a wood resin having a softening point of at least 160 DEG F. in at least one of the polyol or polyisocyanate reactants in an amount between 2 and 50% of the weight of the foam reactants, and mixing and reacting the ingredients to produce a foam. In Examples: (1) a mixture of wood resin, sorbitol-propylene oxide polyether, a pentakis hydroxypropyl dimer of ethylene diamine and tetramethyl guanidine is heated until homogeneous. After cooling, a stannous catalyst and monofluoro trichloromethane are added. Foaming is effected by stirring in toluene-2,4 and 2,6 diisocyanates containing organo-silicon surfactant. Other examples illustrate the use of the quasi-prepolymer method, the resin being incorporated with the diisocyanate before the foaming reaction. Tetrakis (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine and a nitrogen-containing polyether are alternative starting materials. Alternative methods with water as the foaming agent and propylene glycol and triethylene diamine as cross-linkers are also referred to. The use of polyesters from e.g. trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, glycerol and adipic, phthalic, sebacic, maleic and dimer acids is also described. Carbon tetrachloride and methyl chloride are other suitable blowing agents. Suitable wood resins are the aliphatic hydrocarbon-insoluble solid resin portion of wood, which may be hexa treated, heat bodied and air blown wood resin and polymerized wood resins.
