Abstract

A method for coating tablets comprises the steps of placing one or more subcoats containing zein on each of the tablets; applying at least one finish coat containing zein to the tablets in covering relationship to said subcoat or subcoats; dusting the tablets with a dry inert powder, e.g. talcum powder, after or during the application of the finish coat thereto and while the tablets are being continuously tumbled; and then spraying a fine mist of water, preferably deionized, on to the dusted tablets and continuing tumbling of the same until a sheen is obtained on the outer surface of the finish coat on each tablet. Preferably, a wax coating, e.g. carnauba wax and white beeswax, is placed over the finish coat to maintain the sheen of the latter. The compositions which are used for providing the main coatings may contain, in addition to zein, ingredients selected from water, isopropanol, dioctyl sodium sulpho-succinate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, finely divided silica, titanium dioxide, white talc, calcium carbonate and dyes.
