A method for automatically brewing coffee comprises depositing and moistening a first quantity of fresh coffee grounds 84 into a first brewing cup 42, adding additional hot water through a feed tube 16 to form a solution and to wash the solution and grounds into a second brewing cup 48 and, before dispensing the coffee from the second cup, depositing and moistening a second quantity of fresh coffee grounds into the first brewing cup 42. The coffee grounds are fed from a hopper 12 to the cup 42 by means of a feed screw 40 and moistened with a small quantity of hot water from the feed tube 16. The cycle of operations is started by closing a switch which energizes a motor 23 to drive a shaft 26 carrying a set of cams 87. Each cam 87 closes one of the switches 83, 81, 65 and 33 in proper sequence during one complete revolution of the shaft 26 and so starts each separate operation. First a solution is made by adding a flow of hot water to the coffee grounds from the feed tube 16, and as the cup 42 fills, a gravity valve 45 is unseated by a finger 46 and the solution and grounds are washed into the second brewing cup 48. Before the valve 45 is unseated an arm 54 is raised so that a stopper disc 56 closes the outlet 50 of the cup 48 and a ball 57 drops into closing position in a collar 53 of an inner foraminous cup 52. When the valve 45 is reseated the fresh coffee grounds and water are introduced to the cup 42 while the coffee is brewing in the cup 48. After brewing, the arm 54 is half lowered and the liquid dispensed into a receptacle, the arm 54 is then lowered to a pendant position, Fig. 2, which unseats the ball 57 and a flow of cold water is discharged from tube 65 to rinse the grounds from the cup 52.
