Abstract

995,298. Welding by fusion. CROSE-UNITED CORPORATION, and H. C. PRICE CO. March 19, 1963 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 1804/63. Heading B3R. In an arc-welding machine for joining stationary pipes end-to-end, the welding rod is oscillated transversely of the joint, the direction of the transverse movement being adjustable. When welding pipes, whose axes are inclined to horizontal, the direction of transverse movement is maintained horizontal by manual adjustment as the welding rod moves round the joint of support 30, Figs. 1 and 2, consisting of semi-circular members 32 interconnected by struts 38, 64 is secured on a pipe 24 by chains 48 tensioned by toggle devices 50. The members 32 carry rollers which retain and guide a movable semicircular frame 66 to which are fixed chains 90 engaging with motor-driven pinions 96 mounted on opposite ends of the support 30. A plate 108, Fig. 5, pivotally mounted on the frame 66 is urged by a spring 164 towards the pipes and telescopically carries rods 120, 122 connected to a bracket 126, Fig. 3, journalling a roller 158 engaging the pipe 24. A manuallyoperated bell-crank 178 is operable to lift the roller 158 clear of the pipe 24. A platform 202 supported by the bracket 126 so as to be adjustable radially of the pipes 22, 24 by a hand wheel 188 carries bearings 212 in which is journalled a sleeve assembly 208, Fig. 8. The welding head 230 has arms 236 pivotable in the sleeve assembly 208 and is connected through links 342, 312 and 334 to an eccentric 322 driven by a motor 316. Amplitude and direction of the transverse movement of the welding head are varied by altering the pivot point of the link 312 by a hand wheel 292 and by rotating the sleeve assembly 208 by a hand wheel 274, respectively. A reel 346 and a feeding device 350 on the frame 66 supply an electrode to the welding head 230 which is provided with an expendable guide tube extension 260 connected by a coupling 262. Welding current is supplied to the welding head by a cable 250 and carbon dioxide is fed through a tube 354 to shield the welding zone. An enclosure 360 connected to the bracket 126 and provided with a removable transparent panel 358 and a shroud 366 of asbestos webbing surrounds the welding zone. The bracket 126 and so the welding head 230 is adjustable along the pipes by actuation of a motor 140 on the plate 108. The welding head 230 is moved at welding speed from the 12 to the 6 o'clock position on each side in turn and is returned at a faster speed. Two welding heads working in opposite directions may be used.
