Abstract

995,162. Board games; chance apparatus. M. GLASS, [trading as M. GLASS & ASSOCIATES]. Sept. 25, 1962 [Oct. 6, 1961], No. 36452/62. Heading A6H. A peg and board game wherein pegs are moved over an apertured playing board in accordance with the throw of a dice or instructions indicated by some alternative kind of chance apparatus, comprises means whereby visual and/or audio effects result from insertion of the pegs into certain of the apertures on the board, the operating mechanism of at least some of said effects including means for rendering such operation random. As particularly described, the game represents progress through a haunted house, the board 37 being of hollow construction and housing the operating mechanisms associated with the various effects. In most instances, the operating mechanisms are as shown in Fig. 2, each comprising a disc 57 lying beneath its associated hole 25 so as to lie in the path of a peg inserted therein, and mounted for free rotation and tilting movement about its supporting shaft 61. The disc, upon being engaged by a peg, thereby tilts and depresses the tail 51 of a surprise element 31 pivotally mounted within the board 37, thereby causing the element to project upwardly through a slot 55 in the playing surface of the board. Upon removal of the peg, the element 31 is retracted into the board either by gravity or by means of a suitable spring. The disc 57 may also be arranged to simultaneously or alternatively close contacts in an electric circuit to a lamp or bell, or to operate bellows actuating a whistle. In cases where the operation of the effect is desired to be random, the disc is either apertured or slotted so that for some positions of the disc the peg will pass through the disc without tilting the latter, or alternatively the periphery of the disc is slotted so that when a slot in the disc registers with the tail 51 of the corresponding element 31, tilting of the disc does not effect movement of the said element. The apparatus described also comprises a chance device 33 (Fig. 10) for controlling the movement of the pegs over the board, said device comprising a drum 125 inscribed with numbers on its periphery and mounted for rotation within a shell 124 on the board. A gear-wheel 137 secured at one end of the drum co-operates with a toothed sector on a lever 147 projecting from the shell to cause rotation of the drum, whilst a leaf-spring co-operating with a star wheel 134 secured at the other end of the drum ensures that when the latter comes to rest after rotation, a number is visible at the observation window 39. Movement of the lever 147 also operates bellows 153 controlling the whistle 157.
