A mill comprises a housing containing comminuting elements and a rotary drive shaft on which are eccentrically mounted a plurality of substantially annular agitating elements. As shown in Fig. 1, housing 20 contains balls 22 and a shaft 25 which carries a plurality of agitating elements 27 in the form of ring-shaped annuli which are secured to the shaft by welds 28, Fig. 2. The material to be treated and dispersing medium are supplied from a tank 29 to the housing by means of a conduit 31 which contains a pump 32. Treated material is discharged through an outlet 33 provided with a sieve 36 to prevent escape of balls 22. In a modification, the agitating elements each have a trapezoidal-cross-section, the thickness of each element increasing in a direction outwardly of the drive shaft. In another modification, the end faces of each agitating element are corrugated. In a further modification, the agitating elements are of undulate shape. In another modification, the annuli are of different configuration and are spaced axially of the shaft by replaceable sleeves. In a further modification, the annuli are mounted on a horizontal shaft and are spaced from each other by dished springs. In another modification, Fig. 9, agitating elements 73 carried by a shaft 67 each resemble a portion, or the whole, of a helical convolution and each element has its axially spaced ends secured to the shaft. Each element slopes downwardly in a counterclockwise direction. In a modification of this construction, one or more of the elements slope downwardly in a clockwise direction and the remaining elements slope downwardly in a counterclockwise direction. In another modification, the agitating elements form a continuous helix. The helical agitating elements may be of polygonal or circular cross-section, may have end faces provided with radial or circumferential grooves and the peripheral surface of each element may be of cylindrical form and the internal surface of polygonal form.
