Abstract

994,808. Converting. HOOVER CO. July 3, 1962 [July 5, 1961], No. 25444/62. Heading H2F. A D.C. to D.C. converter comprises a pair of transistors 5, 6 and a saturable transformer with two centre-tapped windings connected as shown. When the source voltage, which may be low, is applied one transistor, say 5, conducts more than the other and current flows from its emitter through the base and part winding 16 to the load. Simultaneously, current flows from the emitter to the collector of transistor 5 and through the part winding 14 to the other terminal of the battery. This second current increases the load voltage by transformer action, and the induced voltages in the windings bias transistor 5 fully conducting and transistor 6 fully cut-off. When the transformer, which preferably has a " square loop " core, becomes saturated the bias voltages vanish, transistor 5 ceases conduction and transistor 6 conducts as there is now a high voltage between its emitter and collector, and the new currents, which also make terminal 22 positive flow until the transformer is saturated in the reverse direction, when the cycle is repeated.
