Abstract
An aqueous dispersion is made which contains a graft polymer of butyl acrylate and methacrylic acid on a substrate copolymer of vinylidene chloride, butyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate.ALSO:In improving the break and resistance to abrasion of dry, fully tanned, fat-liquored leather, the leather is impregnated, on one side only, with an aqueous dispersion, having a pH value between 2 and 6.5, containing between 0.5% and 8.0% by weight, of a surface-active agent and between 5% and 20% of a dispersed, water-insoluble linear addition polymer, e.g. a homopolymer or a copolymer, having a Ti value not exceeding 30 DEG C. The particles of the dispersed polymer have a surface-average radius between 250 and 1300 Angstrom units and impregnation is effected so that at least 90% by weight of the deposited polymer is distributed through at least 15%, but not more than 40%, of the thickness of the leather. The dispersion may be applied, as by repeated swabbing, to the grain side of the leather to impregnate it through the corium minor to its junction with the corium major. The dispersion may be applied, as by spraying, to the flesh side of a shearling to impregnate it through the corium major to its junction with the corium minor. The leather may be split leather. The polymer may be a polymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomer molecules, such as those of esters obtained by reacting acrylic or methacrylic acid with one or more than one saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol having 1-18 carbon atoms per molecule. The polymer may be a copolymer containing 0.5-4.0% by weight of acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid and 99.5-96.0% of (a) ethyl acrylate, (b) methyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (c) ethyl acrylate and n-butyl methacrylate, (d) n-butyl acrylate, (e) ethyl acrylate and vinylidene chloride, or (f) ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. Suitable anionic, non-ionic and cationic surface-active agents are specified. In order to accelerate impregnation, the aqueous dispersion may contain 0.5-35% by weight of ethyl, methyl, isopropyl or tertiary-butyl alcohol, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane or diethyl ether, ethyl or methyl acetate, diethylene glycol or its monoethyl or monomethyl ether. After being impregnated, the leather may be hung and dried for 3 hours in a slowly moving current of dry air at 55 DEG C. The dried, impregnated leather may be plated with a stndblasted plate in a press at a temperature of 150 DEG F. and a pressure of 2,500 p.s.i. The resulting leather may be finished with one or more than one coating of nitrocellulose lacquer or a vinyl or acrylic polymer.
