Abstract

Aminated oxymethylene polymers are prepared by reacting an oxymethylene polymer having at least one chemically linked halogen atom with ammonia, an amine or an alkaline reacting amine derivative. The oxymethylene polymer may be formed by copolymerizing trioxane with a halogen-substituted cyclic ether or a halogen-substituted cyclic acetal, e.g. epichlorhydrin or by polymerizing or copolymerizing formaldehyde or trioxane in the presence of a halogen-substituted chain transfer agent, e.g. di(2-chloroethoxy) methane, mono-chloromethyl methyl ether or mono-chloroacetaldehyde diethyl acetal or by reacting a formaldehyde source with 2-chloroethanol. Specified amines include mono-, di- or tri-methylamine, mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine, ethylenediamine, piperidine, aniline, paranitroaniline, morpholine, pyridine, hydrazine, lithium diethylamide and sodium acetamide. The reaction takes place in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl-formamide, dimethylsulphoxide, ethylene glycol, polyethyleneglycols, nitrobenzene and lower aliphatic alcohols. The products may be cross-linked with polycarboxylic acids, esters and acid chlorides, phosgene, polyisocyanates and polyepoxides. Examples are given of the preparation of polyoxymethylene di-(2-aminoethyl) ether, polyoxymethylene di-(2-methylaminoethyl) ether, polyoxymethylene di-(butylaminoethyl) ether, and polydioxolane-(2-aminoethyl) ether.
