A gaseous fluid-solids contactor comprises perforate walls 7, 8 retaining a bed of granular material 6 which has free surfaces 61 adjacent the wall 8 ; gas enters from 38 into passage 27 and through the granular bed into passage 24, and means is provided for a reverse surge flow of gas periodically in order to remove a portion of the granular material adjacent and including the free surfaces 61. Wall 7 is of wire mesh and wall 8 comprises inclined louvres 18. The apparatus may be used for separating fly-ash from furnace exhaust gas using sand as the granular material. Gas is drawn through the filter panel by means of a blower 48. Periodically valve 51 connected to high pressure gas tank 50 is opened quickly to produce a reverse gas surge which causes a mass movement of the granular material so that the contaminated portion spills over into bin 34, being replaced by fresh material from reservoir 19. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the louvres are of greater width and at a smaller angle to the horizontal, the spaces between the louvres being filled with the solid material ; this arrangement is suitable when reaction takes place between the gas and the solid. Other gas-solid contacting processes referred to are coal gasification, catalytic contacting, and gas absorption or adsorption. A number of panels may be arranged in parallel with adjacent panels facing opposite directions.
