Abstract
The invention comprises a continuous process for the production of benzoic acid by the catalytic, liquid-phase oxidation of a monoalkylbenzene with molecular oxygen in the presence of benzoic acid carried out in an adiabatic oxidation zone wherein a liquid phase consisting of a solution of the monoalkylbenzene and benzoic acid containing a heavy metal oxidation catalyst is maintained, which process includes the steps of continuously adding the monoalkylbenzene and benzoic acid to the oxidation zone to produce a liquid reaction mixture containing benzoic acid and the monoalkylbenzene in a weight ratio of 0.2: 1 to 2.5: 1, withdrawing liquid reaction mixture from the oxidation zone circulating the withdrawn reaction mixture in indirect heat exchange with a coolant to a temperature not below the initiation oxidation temperature, recycling the cooled liquid to the oxidation zone, removing from the circulating liquid a minor proportion thereof, crystallizing benzoic acid from the minor portion of the withdrawn reaction mixture, and recovering benzoic acid from the resulting slurry. The minor portion may be removed from the circulating liquid before or after removal of heat of reaction. The treatment of the minor portion of the withdrawn reaction mixture for the crystallization of benzoic acid depends on the benzoic acid concentration. Dilute streams are concentrated by evaporation of monoalkylbenzene to provide a concentrate containing 40% to 60% benzoic acid from which benzoic acid is crystallized. Reactor effluents containing high concentrations of benzoic acid, e.g. above 50% by weight, are charged to a contacting-crystallizing zone which is charged with aqueous benzoic acid, and which is adapted to receive the gasiform products of the oxidation reaction as well as the liquid effluent therefrom. The contacting-crystallizing zone is provided with means to separate unconverted monoalkylbenzene as a liquid phase which is recycled to the oxidation zone. The benzoic acid slurry resulting from either of these alternatives is separated into solid product and mother liquor. Mother liquor, toluene with dissolved benzoic acid, is recycled to the oxidation zone. Specifications 810,020 and 835,753 are referred to.
