Abstract

994,277. Photo - electric height determination. A. LORAND. July 15, 1963 [July 2, 1962], No. 25226/62. Heading H4D. A surveying system for determining the difference in level between two points comprises a transmitter, Fig. 1, emitting a horizontal beam of light at the first point and a receiver at the second point incorporating a photo-cell 21, Fig. 2, controlling a circuit whereby support 27 is driven vertically until the emitted light beam is detected, a graduated scale being provided on support 27. The transmitter in Fig. 1 consists of a helix 13 of tungsten with its longitudinal axis horizontal and a lens system 11, both of which are mounted for sliding to or from parabolic mirror 12; alternatively a laser beam may be employed. The photo-cell is a photo-sensitive resistance in a Schmitt trigger circuit and may be provided with a sensitivity control to achieve discrimination against ambient light; the trigger circuit controls a relay actuating a switch between an elevating motor and battery, a red indicator lamp being energized when the motor runs, Fig. 4 (not shown). The transmitted beam may be wide in azimuth in order that several receivers can operate simultaneously.
