Abstract
Acrolein or methacrolein is produced by reacting at elevated temperatures in the vapour phase propylene or isobutene with molecular oxygen in the presence of arsenic or an arsenic oxide over an oxide composition containing tungsten and oxygen with antimony or titanium. The arsenic or arsenic oxide may be supplied either in admixture with the reactant feed or may be in admixture with the catalyst. In the latter case, arsenic lost by evaporation may be replaced by introducing fresh arsenic oxide or elemental arsenic with the reactants. The catalyst may be supported e.g. on graphite alumina or silica. An inert diluent may be added, e.g. nitrogen, propane, butane, isobutane, carbon dioxide, steam or mixtures thereof.ALSO:A catalyst for oxidizing olefines to unsaturated aldehydes comprises an oxide composition containing tungsten and oxygen with antimony or titanium and may also contain arsenic or an arsenic oxide. The catalyst may be made by mixing the oxides together e.g. in aqueous suspension, followed by heat treatment and addition of arsenic or an arsenic oxide. Alternately the arsenic-containing catalyst may be prepared by coprecipitation from mixed solutions of arsenic salts and the catalyst metal salts. The catalyst may be deposited on a support, e.g. alumina, silica, or graphite.
