Heading D1S. A method of inspecting a web 12 of fabric or wire gauze to detect mechanical flaws therein is characterised in that the web 12 is scanned on one side simultaneously by two control channels which cause air to be passed through the web 12 and that the pressures in both channels are compared so that at the occurrence of a flaw due to thread breakage or snatched up threads the machine producing the web or transferring the web to the inspection station is stopped. As shown, a scanning head 13 moves to and fro across the web 12 in the direction indicated by arrows 14. Compressed air enters the head 13 through a conduit 15, Fig. 1, and passes through throttles 1, 10, chambers 2, 7 and nozzles 4, 5 to pass through the web 12. The chambers 2, 7 are connected by channels 3, 8 to pressure chambers 30, 31, respectively, separated by a disphragm 6. Any change in density of the web 12 cause pressure variation in the chambers 2, 7 and hence in the chambers 30, 31 so that the position diaphragm 6 is shifted and through a stem 9 closes contacts 11. The contacts 11 close a control circuit 16 so that current flow via an amplifier 17 to a rest contact relay 18 to break the main circuit 19 and arrest the machine producing the web or transferring it to the inspection station. In a modification (not shown), suction is applied to the conduit 15 to draw air in through the web 12. The head 13 is mounted by a forked rod 29, Fig. 2, on a carriage 21 movable along a rail 20 between abutments 23, 24 by a pull rope 22 passing around rollers 28 and driven by a motor 25. The conduit 15, preferably a flexible tube, establishes the connection between the head 13 and a switchbox 26. An alarm lamp 27 may be provided to indicate the detection of a fault in the web 12. In a modification (not shown), the web 12 is moved past the stationary head 3.
