[Also in Division G4] In a telegraph system in which a waystation is connected over a duplex line to a central station both stations comprise means for transmitting and receiving messages in 7-bit start-stop code and second means for transmitting an occasional message, relating to reservations for example, which has priority over normal messages. A priority message is preceded by a space nominally two characters long, and the station includes a testing arrangement for determining whether a long space signal is character 32, a valid priority signal or a fault (i.e. an excessively short or long space). Normal messages pass via a one-character shift register before passing to the printer or perforator but this store is disconnected when a priority signal arrives. At the waystation the normal messages come from an automatic transmitter and the priority messages from a separate keyset. At the central station these messages pass to a perforator and a computer, respectively. A teleprinter is provided at the waystation and an automatic transmitter at the central station.
