Abstract

Polymers are made by polymerizing glycollide, or a mixture thereof with a minor molecular amount of another lactide or octamethylcyclo-tetrasiloxane, in the presence of a catalyst which is (a) an alkali metal, (b) a tertiary amine (e.g. benzyldimethylamine) or (c) a quaternary ammonium methoxide (e.g. tetramethylammonium methoxide). Polymerization is effected at 140-160 DEG C. by a bulk process or in the presence of inert liquids which may dissolve the monomers or both the monomers and the resulting polymers.
