[Also in Division E1] A method of converting a slice of honeycomb material to the stably expanded state comprises pulling out the slice to the open cellular state, allowing it to contract in the direction of pulling between restraining members and thereby expand across said direction until it grips said restraining members, and simultaneously with or subsequent to the contraction securing facing material in cell closing relationship with the honeycomb material, thereby stabilizing it in the expanded state. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a slice of honeycomb material 1 is expanded through a rectangular tube of strong kraft paper or cardboard, and after it appears beyond the end 4 of the tube is allowed to relax, hence contracting the direction of expansion by its natural resilience, until the accompanying transverse expansion causes it to grip the sides 5 of the tube. In another embodiment (Fig. 3) a sheet of cardboard or kraft paper 36, glued on its upper surface may be placed in the bottom of a jig. A slice of honeycomb material 31 is expanded to a width W<SP>1</SP>, positioned on the sheet 36 and allowed to contract until gripped by the retaining walls 35 of the jig, and is then covered by a covering sheet 37 glued on its underside. The process is repeated until the jig is full. The walls and base of the jig may be lined with kraft paper which is folded over the honeycomb on completion of the expansion process. The resulting material may be used in the construction of floors and concrete beams.
