Abstract

992,916. Electric resistance gas heater. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 16043/62. Heading H5H. A heater for gases includes a plurality of parallel-connected tubular resistance heating elements arranged in spaced relation one within the other, and constituted of metal mesh to permit the passage therethrough of the gas to be heated. A heater for inert gases for MHD apparatus includes metal mesh strip elements 2a mounted, between terminal blocks 3 and 4, substantially parallel to the axis of an aluminium or steel casing 1, and within a radiation shield 10 provided with graded holes to ensure that gas introduced through pipe 8 and radial ports 9 is evenly distributed as it flows radially inwards through the elements to the outlet 7. The elements, which are of aluminium, stainless steel, nickel/chromium, or tantalum/tungsten, may alternatively be of coaxial cylinder or spiral form, and are connected in parallel between leads 5 and 6, which latter are flexible to permit expansion. Gas temperatures of 2400‹ C. may be attained, and the pressure drop in the heater is sufficiently small to permit its use when turbulent flow cannot be tolerated. It may be mounted vertically, to take advantage of natural convection, and can be used for space heating.
