Abstract

992,788. Centrifugal compressors. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. April 16, 1964 [April 16, 1963], No. 15833/64. Heading F1C. A centrifugal compressor comprises at least two stages each formed by narrowing rotor passages surrounded by a ring of stationary guide vanes, the rotor also including a diffuser part, and the ratio of the energy-converting effect of the diffuser to the energy-increasing effect of the rotor is greater in the higher pressure stage then in the lower pressure stage. This reduces the tendency towards irregularities of flow caused by the formation of boundary layers having a thickness which is large compared with the cross-section of the fluid flow. Since this tendency is less in lower pressure stages, the first stage rotor 29 of the compressor shown is not extended by a diffuser part. The second and third stage rotors 30, 31 have unbladed diffuser parts 19, 28 adjacent the bladed rotor channels 17, 18. The ratio of the energy-converting effect of the diffuser part to the energy-increasing effect of the rotor is arranged to be greater for the rotor 31 than for the rotor 30; for this purpose the radial dimension 21 is made greater than the radial dimension 20. Also, the angle 23 of divergence is greater than the corresponding angle 22. The diffuser inlet width 37 is reduced, but the axial width of the diffuser exit may be greater for the third stage. Preferably, however, this latter dimension is kept constant to allow the guide rings 32, 33, 34 to be of equal width. Intercoolers may be provided.
