Abstract

992,246. Boring earth &c. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. May 26, 1961 [June 13, 1960], No. 19058/61. Heading E1F. A core barrel assembly is inserted into a drill string and latched to the boring end of the string to receive the core, the flow of drilling fluid through the assembly being stopped when the barrel is filled or blocked. The assembly comprises a tubular body 52,58 having apertures 85, 88 for the fluid, a spear 28 on a slidable shaft 44 carrying a valve member 94, a slidable shaft 71 carrying a valve member 96, and a barrel 20 having a core retainer 17 and attached to the shaft 71. The assembly is latched to the string 1 by balls 86 which are pressed into engagement with a groove 86<SP>1</SP> by a part 92 of the shaft 44. In the latched position of the assembly the barrel is housed within the drill head which comprises reamer and drill section 3, 4 carrying diamonds 10, 12. When during drilling the barrel is filled or blocked it presses the shaft 71 upwardly, the member 96 stopping the flow of the fluid and the resultant rise in pressure indicating that the assembly should be brought to the surface. An overshoot 30 is lowered to engage the spear and pulled upwardly, the initial pull causing the shaft 44 to release the balls from the groove and free the assembly. The assembly is normally lowered under gravity into the string attached to the overshoot, but the member 94 may be screwed towards its seat, and the body may have a seal engaging the string so that the pressure of the fluid acts to feed the assembly. In modifications the member 94 is dispensed with and the member 96 may take other forms. The overshoot may have a seal engaging the string to permit pressure feeding.
