Abstract

Polyolefines of high whiteness are prepared by polymerizing olefines in the presence of liquid diluents by means of mixed catalysts containing titanium tetrahalides and organo-metallic compounds of Group I to III of the Mendel<\>aeeff Table, under conditions of pressure and temperature such that the polymer is separated in the liquid as a solid phase which is then separated and washed out, characterized in that the polymerization is effected in the presence of hydrogen at a constant olefine-hydrogen partial pressure ratio, the hydrogen partial pressure being kept at less than 10% of the olefine partial pressure. Ethylene and its homologues are particularly suitable monomers. Suitable organo-metallic compounds mentioned are aluminium-organic compounds having 1 to 3 alkyl, aryl and/or cycloalkyl groups and up to 2 halide atoms in the molecule e.g. aluminium trialkyls, triaryls, tricycloalkyls, dialkyl aluminium halides and alkyl aluminium sesquihalides. Liquid hydrocarbons mentioned are butane, pentane, hexane, isopropylcylohexane, petrol and diesel oil fractions. Polymerization temperature is from 20 to 200 DEG C. and pressure is ordinary or slightly elevated. The polymerization may be carried out continuously or discontinuously in the presence of an inert diluent. The hydrogen is advantageously mixed with the olefine; in the case of a continuous process it can be introduced to the cycled gas.
