Abstract

991,434. Controlling clutches; change-speed gearing; friction clutches. AXEL WICKMAN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd. Oct. 5, 1962, No. 37707/62. Headings F2C, F2D, F2E, F2F and F2L. The servo controlling means of a friction clutch is controlled by a torque responsive means to regulate the clutch engagement to a value at least sufficient for the transmitted torque. In a planetary overdrive gear having a plant carrier 53 splined to an input shaft 46, a ring gear 56 rigid with an output shaft 50 and a sun gear 57 splined to a cone clutch member 60 engageable with the ring gear 56 for direct drive or a brake 67 for overdrive, the clutch member 60 is urged to the direct drive condition by a series of springs 64. The spring force is modulated by fluid pressure in a cylinder 75 acting on a piston 65 interposed between the springs and the clutch member 60, the fluid pressure being inversely related to torque by a variable spring-rate relief valve 39; the valve being controlled by movement of a lever 36 from a collar 32 moved axially against a spring 29 by torque reaction in helical splines 59, connecting the sun gear with the clutch member, or by helical teeth in the planetary gearing. Rotation of a valve 71 covers fluid pressure to be admitted to an annular cylinder 73 to move a conical piston 67 to disengage the clutch member from the ring gear and to act as a brake on the clutch member for overdrive ratio. Under these conditions the engaging pressure of the brake is still determined by the balance of loading of the springs 64 and relief valve pressure in cylinder 75. The gearing may be used as an underdrive unit by reversing the roles of the input and output shafts. In simplified forms of the invention helical gearing, or helical splines, provide a torque sensing drive to a cone clutch which may be either spring engaged or spring released, the fluid pressure acting against the spring force.
