Abstract

Metalloxane-siloxane polymers, containing units having at least one alkoxy group bonded to a metal atom and represented by the formula <FORM:0991284/C3/1> where R is an alkyl group, R1 and R11 are monovalent hydrocarbon groups, M is Al, Ti or Zn, and n is the valency of the metal atom in the polymer less 2, are phosphonated by reaction with a mono- or di-alkyl phosphonic acid or a mono- or di-aryl phosphonic acid. The reaction can be effected by heating the reactants under reflux conditions with stirring, preferably in an inert atmosphere and, if desired, in an inert reaction medium, e.g. butyl acetate. In Example (1) diphenyldiacetoxysilane was reacted with aluminium isopropoxide to yield a resin which was mixed with diphenyl-phosphonic acid with subsequent heating and stirring under a cover of dry nitrogen; volatiles were distilled off and low molecular weight polymers and unreacted material were extracted with ethanol to leave the desired product as a white powder. Similar preparations of the corresponding Ti and Zn products are described in Examples 2 and 3, respectively.
