Abstract

Acrolein is made by reacting at elevated temperature in the vapour phase propylene or isobutene with molecular oxygen over an oxidation catalyst comprising antimony oxide combined with or admixed with an oxide of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Ga, Ge, Se, Rb, Y, Nb, Ru, Rh, Pd, In, Os, Ir and/or U. The catalyst (see Division B1) may be on a support, especially silica or alumina. The reaction feed may contain 1 to 20% by volume of olefin, 1 to 20% oxygen and may also contain an inert diluent. Listed diluents include nitrogen, propane, butane, isobutane, carbon dioxide and steam. The reaction temperature of 250 DEG to 550 DEG C. is advantageous. The aldehyde may be recovered by countercurrent extraction with water at a pH at or below 7 followed by fractional distillation of the product. The examples include details of catalyst preparation.ALSO:Catalysts suitable for oxidation of propylene or isobutene in the vapour phase with molecular oxygen (see Division C2) comprise antimony oxide in combination or admixture with an oxide of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Ga, Ge, Se, Rb, Y, Nb, Ru, Rh, Pd, In, Os, Ir, and/or U. The catalyst, which may be supported e.g. on silica or alumina and may be heated, in molecular oxygen prior to use, at between 400 DEG C. and 1000 DEG C. may be produced by an admixture of antimony oxide, especially the hydrated oxide ex metal and nitric acid, with an oxide or hydroxide of one of the specified metals, or by coprecipitation from aqueous solution or suspensions of salts of antimony and one of the other specified metals. In the examples the preparation of catalysts comprising antimony and Fe, U, Ni, V, Cr, Zn, In, is described.
