Abstract
A process for roasting iron sulphides, which may be contaminated with copper, nickel or cobalt, to form sulphur dioxide suitable for sulphuric acid production and magnetic capable of being leached to remove the above-mentioned impurities is characterized by reacting the sulphide at 700 DEG to 900 DEG C. with 94 to 103% wt. of the oxygen required to oxidize the total sulphide sulphur content to sulphur dioxide and the total iron content to magnetite, thus producing sulphur dioxide substantially free from sulphur trioxide and magnetite substantially free from ferric oxide, separating the product solid and gaseous phases, and cooling the magnetite under non-oxidizing conditions. Preferably, heat is extracted from the reaction and reaction is effected in a bed of the sulphide fluidized by the passage of oxygen therethrough. In specific examples the magnetite thus prepared is leached in the presence of air to remove copper by (1) dilute sulphuric acid, (2) aqueous ferric sulphate containing sulphuric acid, (3) ammoniacal ammonium carbonate, (4) ammoniacal ammonium carbonate containing potassium persulphate, (5) aqueous potassium persulphate containing sulphuric acid, and (6) cupric ammonium carbonate solution followed by ammoniacal ammonium carbonate.
