Abstract

A water-miscible dihydroxy compound or compounds with a M.W from 500-3000 is reacted with a less than equivalent quantity of diisocyanate and the product cross-linked with sulphur. The water-soluble compounds may be polyethylene oxides, polyacetals produced from polyethylene alcohols and formaldehyde, polyesters of polyethylene glycols with dicarboxylic acids or polycarbonates from polyethylene glycol. Conventional diisocyanates are specified. Chain extenders, e.g. water, glycols, diamines, amino alcohols may be added to the mixture. The glycols may contain an allyl radical and compounds containing a cyclohexene ring or phenyl-b -hydroxy ethylamines may be added. The cross-linking may take place in the presence of fillers, e.g. ZnO, SiO2, carbon black. Other hydrophilic additives specified are: cellulose powder, cotton flocks, sodium lignin, lignin sulphonic acid, starch, carbethoxy-cellulose, leather fibres and cellulose-methylether. Organic and inorganic dyestuffs, plasticizers e.g. polyethylene oxides, glycerine and trimethylol propane may be added. In examples, diphenylmethane diisocyanate was added to (1) a mixture of polyethylene oxide and 1 bis-methylol-3-methyl-cyclohexene, (2) polyethylene oxide and a glycol of formula <FORM:0989760/C3/1> (3) polyethylene oxide followed by glycerol monoallyl ether, (4) triethylene glycol formaldehyde polyacetal followed by glycerine monoallyl ether. Specification 876,451 is referred to.ALSO:Textile fabric or leather is coated with a polyurethane obtained by reacting a water-miscible dihydroxy compound of molecular weight 500-3000 with a less than equivalent quantity of diisocyanate and cross-linking the product with sulphur. The coating may be applied by calendering or in solution in an organic solvent which is then evaporated.
