[Also in Division B7] A cross-linked, biaxially oriented polyolefine casing comprises two or more seamless pieces of polyolefin film which have been joined by heat sealing, said film having in its oriented state a tensile strength of at least 4000 1b. per square inch at 25‹ C., a shrink energy of at least 100 pounds per square inch in each direction at 96‹ C., and a thickness of 0.25 to 5 mils. The casing may be in the form of a balloon which may be placed within a like balloon with the seams out of register and then " cold racked," i.e. inflated with air at ambient temperature until a back pressure is observed, and the back pressure maintained by the continued introduction of air into the balloon, thereby compensating for the stress relaxation of the balloon. The balloon is normally inflated in this manner to about 80% of its bursting pressure. The interior of the balloon may be coated with a dispersion of finely divided carbon black with a solid organic polymer by wetting the inner surface of the balloon a dispersion of the carbon black in a solution of the polymer in a volatile solvent, and evaporating the solvent from the film of the dispersion adhering to the inner surface of the balloon. Alternatively the interior of the balloon may be dusted with a finely divided metal, the metal particles adhering by electrostatic forces to the film. The film may be cross-linked by irradiation with 2 to 20, preferably 6 to 20, megarads of high energy ionizing radiation. The casing or balloon may be biaxially oriented by exerting within it a fluid pressure while maintaining a temperature 1‹ to 35‹ C. above the transition temperature to impart at least 100% increase in area, the casing or balloon being freely suspended in a gaseous atmosphere during the orienting, and the casing or balloon being cooled to below the transition temperature while maintaining the internal fluid pressure. The casings of the invention are particularly suitable for meteorological balloons.
