Abstract
989,323. Tubular films. SCHOLVENCHEMIE A.G. Sept. 18, 1963 [Oct. 3, 1962], No. 36806/63. Heading B5B. A tubular film made by the inflation process has a profile impressed thereon during the actual process, so as to render the finished film slip-proof. In the apparatus of Fig. 1, an inflated tubular film extruded from the annular nozzle 1 is flattened by the guides 2, heated if necessary by infra-red emitters 3, and then passed between the sealing and take-off rollers 4, at least one of which is profiled, e.g. in a honeycomb, chequered or grained pattern so that an embossed pattern is impressed on the film at a temperature lower than its softening point. The rollers 4 are adapted to be heated or cooled as necessary. Low-pressure polyethylene may be so embossed at temperatures of 50-125 C., especially 60-80 C. if a film of maximum strength is desired, or 110-115 C. for deep-drawn profiles. To prevent a notch effect along the folded edges of the film, the edge areas of the rolls are preferably free of profiling. In the apparatus of Figs. 2 and 3, the extrusion nozzle comprises an annular orifice 13 and an outer ring 12 rotatably disposed with respect to a circular array of bores thus sectioned. In operation, inflated tubular film extruded from the annular orifice is surrounded by an inner filament row extruded rectilinearly and an outer filament row extruded spirally, thus producing a meshwork 14 which bonds to the tubular film since both are in the thermoplastic range. The tubular film 15 is then flattened and withdrawn by the take-off rollers. Specified materials include low-pressure polyolefins, especially low-pressure polyethylene and poly propylene and polyvinyl chloride.
