Abstract

A composition comprises a polyoxyalkylene and 0.1 to 10% calculated on the weight of the polyoxyalkylene of a polymer of an N-vinyl lactam of formula <FORM:0989183/C3/1> where n is 3 to 7. Specified polyoxyalkylenes are the homopolymer of trioxan and its copolymers with diethylene glycol formal diisolane, butanediol formal, ethylene oxide propylene oxide, oxacyclobutane or tetrahydrofuran. The terminal hydroxy groups of the polymers may have been blocked by esterification, e.g. with acetic anhydride or by etherification, e.g. with vinyl ethers. Specified lactams are polyvinylpyrrolidone of polyvinyl capryllactam. There may also be present a costabilizer, e.g. a phenol, hydrogenated phenol or an organic sulphur compound. Specified are hydrogenated methoxy nonylphenol, 2:6:di-methylol-p-cresol, the condensation product of acetone with nonylphenol, 2:6-diisobornyl-p-cresol or the condensation product of o-cresol, camphene and formaldehyde the phenol being hydrogenated to an extent of 25%. The sulphur in the organic sulphur compound may be attached to an -SH, =S or -Sn-group where n is 1, 2, 3 or 4. A further costabilizer may also be present, i.e. a dicarboxylic acid amide.
