Abstract

A compound having an olefinic linkage is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising a complex of a transition metal having an atomic number from 23 to 32, 40 to 51, or 57 to 84 with at least one molecule of a biphyllic ligand containing trivalent phosphorus, arsenic or antimony dispersed in a medium a high-boiling oxygen-containing solvent and the reaction mixture is subsequently distilled to separate the desired reaction product (aldehyde and/or alcohol) from the solvent and the catalyst. Suitable solvents are, for example, alcohols such as 1,2,6-hexanetriol and tridecyl alcohol; ketones such as ethyl decyl ketone and isobutyl isoheptyl ketone, heterocyclic compounds such as 1,1-dioxythiolane and particularly ethers such as the dibutyl ether of ethylene or diethylene glycol or aromatic ethers such as methoxy- and ethoxy-benzene, methyl phenoxy-ethoxy-ethyl ether, phenoxy phenoxy-ethyl ether and 1,4-diphenoxybenzene. The preferred catalysts are those containing Group VIII transition metals, particularly cobalt. In the examples (a) propene is converted to butanol using a cobalt octoate/tributyl phosphine catalyst dissolved in a mixture of diphenyl ether and biphenyl; (b) propene is converted to butanol using a cobalt/tributyl phosphine catalyst dissolved in ethyl decyl ketone or 1,2,6-hexane triol; (c) 1-pentene is converted to hexanol using a cobalt octoate/tributyl phosphine catalyst dissolved in a mixture of diphenyl ether and biphenyl or in the dibutyl ether of ethylene glycol.
