An element for assembling tubes, bars and like members e.g. for scaffolding, comprises a plate having cross-shaped recesses 4, 5 terminating in transverse ribs 7 to receive the elements to be assembled, the plate being formed with an open-ended slot at each corner arranged to engage a clamping element. As shown in Fig. 4, the tubes T<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>2</SP> may be held assembled by means of arcuate bolts B<SP>1</SP>, formed with sockets 10, which are engaged in cavities 9 and formed adjacent the slots 8; or alternatively tubes T<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>2</SP>, T<SP>3</SP> may be placed between plates P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> clamped together by bolts 14, as in Fig. 8. In a further example, see Fig. 12, a number of tubes are connected by means of plates P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP>, P<SP>3</SP> and a stirrup E. The plates may be composed of metal alloy, or of rigid plastics material e.g. superpolyamide, or methyl polymethacrylate.
