Abstract

988,643. Puncture repairing plugs. NATIONAL RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1963 [March 2, 1962], No. 7512/63. Heading B7C. In repairing a pneumatic tyre puncture a plug, having a stopper 12 with a hardened and pointed axial tip 26 at one end thereof to facilitate insertion of the plug into the puncture and a flange 14 formed integrally around the same end of the stopper, is inserted in the puncture by means of a driving tool 18 having a collar 19 which embraces the stopper 12 in re-expandably attenuated condition, and the driving tool is then withdrawn to pull the flange 14 against the interior surface 34 of the tyre and to allow the stopper 12 to expand into the puncture. The plug has an integral tail 22 of smaller cross-section than the bore of the collar 19 so that it can easily be threaded through it and pulled in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 6 until the whole length of the stopper 12 is contained in the collar. The hardened tip 26 is formed integrally or as a separate element embedded in the end of the stopper and has a pointed apex 32. The base 28 of the tip 26 has a radius greater than that of the stopper in its attenuated state. Annular ribs may be formed on the stopper 12 to enhance its sealing and retaining properties. The flange 14 is held against the inner surface 34 by cement and/or the fluid pressure within the tyre when mounted on a wheel.
