Abstract

Emulsions of tar-water or oil-water are separated by passing through a vessel packed with sharp-edged material (e.g. glass or rock splinters, turning chips, punching waste, sheetmetal strips), the flow rate being chosen to provide a residence time of from 0,2-2 hours, and then into a tank from which the phases of the emulsion are removed separately. Preferably the emulsion is passed through the vessel at a temperature exceeding 40 DEG C. and a pressure exceeding one atmosphere.
