Abstract

A paper coating composition comprises a neutral or alkaline aqueous slurry of a paper-coating grade mineral pigment and a dispersed hydrophilic elastomeric resin, the resin being a thermoplastic polymer prepared by emulsion polymerization of 34 to 46% of a conjugated 1-3-diolefin, 19 to 34% of a vinyl aromatic monomer 1 to 15% of an acrylonitrile and 10 to 18% of an alpha-beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid. Specified diolefins are butadiene, piperylene, isoprene, hexadiene, chloroprene and chloropentadiene, specified aromatics are styrene vinyl toluene, p-ethylstyrene, p-chlorostyrene, and 2-4 dichlorostyrene specified "nitriles" are methacrylonitrile and alpha-butylacrylonitrile while alpha-chloro-acrylic acid, ataconic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, citraconic acid and teraconic acid are specified acids. Conventional emulsion polymerization technique is employed.ALSO:Paper is coated with a composition comprising a neutral or alkaline aqueous slurry of a paper-coating grade mineral pigment and a dispersed hydrophilic elastomeric resin, the resin being a thermoplastic polymer made by emulsion polymerization of 34-46% of a conjugated 1-3-diolefin, 19-34% of a vinyl aromatic monomer, 1-15% of an acrylonitrile and 10-18% of an alpha-beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid (see Division C3). The coating composition is prepared from the emulsion polymer by mixing, the pH being adjusted with an alkali and conventional adhesives, e.g. casein added. The coating weights may be in the range of 2,5-30 pounds dry solids per ream per side and the base paper weight in the range of 30-500 pounds per ream. In the examples, (II) a polymer from 38 parts butadiene, 36 styrene, 10 acrylonitrile, and 14 glacial methacrylic acid is diluted with water to give 25% solids and pH adjusted to 8,5. A paper web formed on a Fourdrinier machine from a mixture of bleached hard and soft wool fibres having long and short fibres is primed with a conventional clay-starch coating and then coated on both sides using two trailing blades in tandem, (III) 72 parts of the polymer mixed with 75 parts fine coating clay, 15 calcium carbonate, 10 titanium dioxide, 1 tetrasodium phosphate, 1 Vegetal and water to give 42% solids is applied to a 60 pound ream weight prime coated unsized body stock by roll coater, and (IV) 62 parts of the polymer mixed with 95 parts fine coating clay, 5 titanium dioxide, 1 tetrasodium pyrophosphate, 2,5 ammonia cut casein, 1 Vegetal and water to 43% solids is applied by air knife to the prime coated wire side of an overprint body stock.
