Abstract

The invention comprises a process for producing an alkyl mercaptan by dissolving a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst in a liquid alkyl mercaptan, admixing the solution thus obtained with an olefin, and contacting the resultant mixture with hydrogen sulphide at a temperature in the range -30 DEG C. to + 10 DEG C. at which the mixture remains liquid. Numerous olefins, including polymerized olefins, are specified. Catalysts specified are anhydrous aluminium chloride, boron trifluoride with hydrogen fluoride or phosphoric acid, stannic chloride with phosphoric acid, and zinc chloride. The catalyst solvent is preferably the desired product. Reaction is preferably effected at a pressure not exceeding 2 kg./cm.2 The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in the Figure, in which the reaction tower has upper section 2, having gas-liquid contact packing, and lower section 4. The olefinic reactant is introduced from tank 1, the catalyst solution <PICT:0988155/C2/1> from tank 3, and the hydrogen sulphide through pipe 16; in this manner the olefin may be saturated with hydrogen sulphide prior to contact with the catalyst. The reaction product is removed from pot 5 to purification vessels 7, 9, 10 and 12.
