Abstract
987,265. Centrifugal pumps. SIGMUND PUMPS Ltd. Feb. 22, 1963 [Feb. 27, 1962], No. 7682/62. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] A pump and electric motor unit for pumping liquids comprises a pump impeller, a motor stator and a motor rotor, the pump impeller and a rotor body providing a mounting for the rotor laminations being formed integrally with one another and of synthetic plastics materials. The motor-driven pump shown in Fig. 1 comprises a stator body 10 made of a synthetic plastics material such as an epoxy resin, in which the stator laminations and windings 12 are embedded. A rotor body 36, also of a synthetic plastics material such as an epoxy resin, carries graphite bearing bushes 43, 44 by means of which it is journalled on a stationary stub shaft 29 carried by a boss 32 formed on the closed end 11 of the stator body 10. A flange 33 and a washer 34 act as thrust bearings. The rotor body 36 carries rotor laminations 42 and is formed integrally with a pump impeller 38. A metal housing 21 is formed in two halves each having a flanged cylindrical portion which fits over an annular rib 13 on the stator body 10 with the flange abutting a further annular rib 14. The flanges are engaged by a channel-section metal retaining band 24. Sockets are formed on the two ends of the band to receive a U-shaped joining members- 25. The pumped liquid flows from the impeller 38 to an outlet 23 via the annular spaces between the housing halves and the stator body 10, the spaces being connected by axial passages 27 in the annular rib 13. Some of the liquid returns to the impeller eye through a filter 47 and holes 45, 46 to provide cooling and lubrication. In a modification, Fig. 2, the rotor laminations 55 are enclosed within a rotor body 51 of synthetic plastics material, inwardly extending flanges 52, 53 making liquid-tight engagement with a single graphite bearing bush 54. In a further modification, the rotor laminations are completely enclosed in a cylinder of synthetic plastics material.
