Abstract

<PICT:0987125/C6-C7/1> Pig iron is refined particularly to remove phosphorus by blowing with oxygen through lances in a converter which undergoes an agitating movement in which its longitudinal axis describes the surface of a double cone of circular or elliptical cross-section. The converter 1 with its trunnions 2 is mounted in bearings 3 of a gimbal ring 4, held in stationary bearings 6 by journals 5, and a crank drive, e.g. parallel cranks 11 and 12 interconnected by a coupling rod 13, is disengageably connected to the lower part of the converter, e.g. in the centre of its base or laterally on journals 14 or 15. The common vertex of the double cone described by the converter's longitudinal axis is disposed at the intersection of the central axis of the trunnion 2 and journals 5. Remaining forces of inertia may be balanced by counter-weights 18 on the cranks 11, 12 (see Fig. 4, not shown).
